Test method:

Air discharge: mainly for out of reach of the position, using the round head of the discharge gun test

Contact discharge: It is mainly carried out for the conductive position of metal. At present, the ESD gun used in the laboratory adopts the HBM model.

Test requirements:

Air discharge: It needs to break down air, so at this time the environment has a lot of influence (such as temperature, humidity, air pressure, approach speed, discharge distance, etc.), will actually attenuate ESD energy, discharge path is also random.

Contact discharge: The energy is directly transmitted to the switch, the discharge energy loss is small, the path is determined (not referring to the electrostatic dissipation path), so it is more stringent.

Air discharge is air controlled by high pressure ionization, and the formation of a discharge path.

Contact discharge is the discharge through the high voltage switch after the discharge electrode contacts with the measured object. At the same voltage, the current of contact discharge is much larger than that of air discharge, and it is easier to damage electronic devices.
